Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, ladies and gentlemen:

It’s a great pleasure to join you for this historical moment, this strategy is the best investment we can make in a future of humanity. Better health for all in a global challenge. I am grateful to be the ambassador for HIV/AIDS of China under WHO. It gives me more chance to help meet the healthy challenge.

In 2006, one of my first trips as China AIDS ambassador took me to a poor village in China. There, I met a five-year-old boy, named GAO Jun. He was short and skinny, with festering skin all of his body. Having lost his parents to AIDS, had no one to look after him, he did not talk to anyone, or look others in the eye.

Seeing his condition was heartbreaking. From that moment on, helping AIDS orphans has been a top priority for me. Together with the government and civil society, I raise fund to build schools and find treatment for them.

All efforts quickly paid off. When I saw GAO Jun again, he looked much taller and happier, his fester was gone. And he joined me in making a public service at called “Together Forever”. He told me that his dream is to be a pilot. I hope his dream will come true.

I have met hundreds of orphans like GAO jun. Nothing makes me happier than seeing these children grow up strong and health. One of them has started her own family. When I first met Nannan, she was only 13 and in poor health. Through regular treatment, she got much better. She then got happily married.

Three years ago, she and her husband decided to have a baby. So he gave her the treatment to prevent mother to child transmission. It was very successful. She is now the mother of a healthy baby.

This is the difference we can make by reaching out to them. In recent years, a summer camp is held each year to bring together AIDS orphans from across China. They joined by me and other AIDS ambassadors, the famous actors, TV hosts and sports stars. In fact, many of us are not just ambassadors for AIDS, but also for TB and anti-smoking.

I remember, Doctor Margret Chen was there with us at the summer camp in 2013. Just last month, I went to these years summer camp at Beijing Youth Camper International. We showed children what we do to help them discovered their talent. We also tell them about the UN.

They would share with us how their lives are changed. When I see these smiles on the faces, when I see how healthy and happy they are now, when I think about how far they have come, I could hardly hold back tears in my eyes.

Sometimes I go to Universities in China, to talk about AIDS awareness, many have become volunteers against AIDS and the disease of discrimination.

Still, a lot more needs to be done, I remember asking the orphans, what will you be doing in 40 years. The girl shocked her head and said, I do not. What a said answer! There’s no vaccine for AIDS yet, but our love can be just as powerful as any vaccine.

I want to thank UN for its commitment at this important strategy. I want to thank the international and Chinese organizations for helping China fight HIV/AIDS over the years. I want to thank the UN agencies like WHO, UNAIDS, UNICEF and UN Women, for their contribution to global health.

China will always be your strong partner and give full support to the new strategy. As Mr. Secretary General said, we all have a role to play, for our children and children’s children. Let’s work together, to make the strategy a success. Thank you very much.
